Ballina Coast & Hinterland
Ballina Coast & Hinterland is in the heart of the Northern Rivers, just over an hour’s drive south of Brisbane, and even closer to the Gold Coast. It’s a one hour flight from Sydney so it’s within easy reach of just about everywhere.
Our lifestyle is laid-back and friendly, our community is warm and welcoming and we host a calendar full of vibrant markets and events. We are blessed with rich, fertile farmlands and an idyllic climate, and our natural produce is second to none.
The Aboriginal people of this area are from the Bundjalung Nation. The Bundjalung have lived in this area for over 1,000 years and there are sites of great cultural and spiritual importance to our community scattered throughout the Shire. This is sacred country to the Bundjalung, and we ask that you respect their land, culture and beliefs.
With lush subtropical rainforests, 32 kms of pristine, sandy beaches and crystal clear waterways, endless streams, lakes and estuaries and the vast reaches of the Richmond River, the Ballina Coast & Hinterland is a natural wonder.
On an island at the mouth of the Richmond River town of Ballina is the commercial and cultural heart of the area. The town is brimming with things to see and do…the maritime museum, treasure troves of antiques and curios, art and craft shops and markets; boutiques; ane magnificent walk and bike paths.
Enjoy a leisurely cruise on the Richmond River; journey into the teaming wetlands of North Creek by canoe; or thrill to the annual migration of the humpback whales from any of the coastal headlands. The fishing at Flat Rock and Angels Beach is legendary and, if you wet your line at dawn from Ballina’s North or South Walls, you’re in for a breakfast feast!
Away from the coast, the hinterland is punctuated with the villages of Alstonville, Newrybar, Tintenbar and Wardell, where you’ll find wonderful parks and gardens, cosy cafes, country pubs and galleries and shops filled with exquisite local arts, crafts and fresh produce.
Come and spend some time with us and you’ll soon discover why visitors, ‘sea changers’ and ‘tree changers’ flock to this area.
